Afro Boogie – NL

Born in Rotterdam, man of the world in Amsterdam! Niels Nieuborg (a.k.a Arp Frique) always thought he didn’t have much musical DNA since music was no big part of his early childhood. Until he discovered his dad used to be a singer till he was forced to quit due to the Dutch conscription.

When Niels first heard Nirvana’s “Smells Like Teen Spirit”, it changed everything and it was his dad who got him all his first musical instruments. Age 17 he was sent o to medical school and a er finishing his 6 hear study he worked at the only Caribbean restaurant in Rotterdam. An eye-opener! A vibrant multicultural vibe led him into the scene of music from Surinam, Cape Verde, Curacao, Morocco and India. A er working only for one year as doctor he decided to focus on a musical career as musician, DJ and producer! He also opened his very own restaurant, Toko 94.
The pan-Tropical restaurant was an instant hit. Besides the great food he started to host concerts there with the likes of Azymuth, Ed Motta, Dutch/Suriname legend Ronald Snijders and many more. For Snijders he produced the Nelson & Djosa sessions, a recording which premiered during the 2016 edition of North Sea Jazz Festival. He got support from musicians he worked with in his own venue and also he added some interesting flavours from around the globe like trumpet player Avisai Cohen, Dwight Trible, Orlando Julius and Bassekou Kouyate. This year the album got nominated for a Edison Jazz Award, the Dutch Grammy’s.

This is where we get to the point. Let us introduce you Arp Frique! A er many productions Arp Frique realized that DJ’s never spin this kind of tropical dance-music. He even never find the right moment in his own sets. So; why not put a band together and ask his musical friends to join? Arp Frique send out some snippets to Antal (Rush Hour) and KC (Kindred Spirits) and both were triggered. A er a long period of recording and mixing he finished the album and the result is his first solo album, under his new artistic profile, Arp Frique. Arp Frique “It stands for everything I love: all the Arp synths which I use extensively on this record, A(rp) frique=Africa (one of my main inspirations is African and tropical music from all decades), and “Frique” refers to the disco of course. I imagined myself in a sweaty nightclub in Sao Paolo, Kingston, Lagos or Paramaribo somewhere in the mid to late 70’s, that’s the sound I went for, the sound I love the most” The album called EXOTECA features Ed Motta, Orlando Julius, Ronald Snijders, Americo Brito, Humprey Campbell and Arp Frique himself on all instruments plus some solo features. The sound is danceable, cheerful eclectic and tropical. The tune Nos Magia is already adopted by Gilles Peterson and got airplay on NTS, BBC6Music and in DJ sets of Antal, Hunee and Floating Points , to name a view.

The 8 piece live band got it’s o icial premiere during a sold out Felabration Party in Paradiso Noord. People where smiling, dancing and loved the tropical boogie-tunes. A full length album is to be expected in April.
It’s about time to spread this to the world !
