BLACKALICIOUS

Hip-Hop – US

BIO

Blackalicious is an American hip hop duo from California made up of rapper Gift of Gab and DJ/producer Chief Xcel. They are noted for Gift of Gab’s often “tongue-twisting”, multisyllabic, complex rhymes and Chief Xcel’s “classic” beats. As example of their work, the famous Alphabetic Aerobics which is a lexical nursery rhyme with growing speed.
Like a few other West Coast rap acts, including the Pharcyde and Jurassic 5, Blackalicious generally favor what hip-hoppers call the “positive tip”; in other words, its lyrics have often been spiritual, conscious and uplifting rather than violent or misogynous. Like a lot of alternative rappers, Blackalicious can be quirky and eccentric; nonetheless, spirituality is a big part of the group’s music. They released their first single and EP Melodica in the late nineties with relative success amongst the alternative underground hip hop scene.
They’re making their comeback with their 4th album Imani Vol. 1.
