Some artists seem to carry the secret of a conquering exhilaration and contagious happiness inside them. La Battue are definitely some of them!
After three EP’s (Search Party I 2019 ; Get Set, Go ! I 2021 ; In the attic I 2022) that didn’t go unnoticed, the disciples of Local Natives and Phoenix are releasing their first album : Farrago (Parapente Music). Reaping the hopes invested in the band since 2018, the new album shows, without forgetting their staple vocal harmonies, a new found fusional elegance emanating from these 10 new sophisticated tracks.
At stage front, Ellie and Yurie, choir sisters from a different mother, mix voices with keyboards. Bertrand, Ellie’s brother, drives the rhythm on the drums. Ellie and Bertrand are Franco-British, the offspring of a sound engineer and a chorist. Yurie grew up in South Korea before studying music at Tours’ Jazz school. Bertrand has played in the band Totorro, Yurie in Yachtclub and Ellie still collaborates with Mermonte. All these different experiences culminating here in an incandescent apotheosis.
Based in Rennes, this recomposed family unveils an imaginary realm inspired by the Beach Boys as much as by Steve Reich, repossessing electronic music to extract its organic quintessence, exploring echos with melodic limpidity.
Following-up on their DIY synth-pop debut, distinguished by a final of Inouïs du Printemps de Bourges or the prix Ricard Live of 2021 and Le FAIR 2022, La Battue steps their game up with their new album, an electrifying odyssey inviting us to celebrate the little joys (Little Joys), to speedily surprise everyone (Second Gear), to lead a revolution from the bed (Five To Nine) and even to conquer silences that fret (Higher).
Written and sung in French, a first for la Battue, the song “1/100” tackles the harsh reality of feminicides, bearing witness of a strong commitment hiding behind a lighter façade.
All tracks on Farrago were recorded and produced in the south-west of France with Benoît Bel (studio Mikrokosm), conferring to them a particular essence, where raw power sublimes intricate composition. One could almost spot the soaring influence of Para One, mixed with symphonic melodies of Grizzly Bear, voices hoisted up to a majestic level, whilst remaining generously pop.
« Try to see the light in me » is one of the opening lines of the album. At the album first listen through, we can easily affirm that the objective is attained.
